ok..Ill try to keep this short....went fising about a month ago and my boat was running really good. I arrived at my fising spot cut the engine and fished for awhile..after getting zero bites i tried to crank up and go and she would not fire. I had to be towed back to the dock. I have cleaned all three carbs, replaced all spark plugs, checked for spark each plug fires, bowls fill up with fuel but she wont even try to run. I even went to as far as to spary starter fluid into the cylinder and it still would not fire.....any ideas?

Hey, welcome to iboats! I've heard starter fluid is bad for 2 cycle engines... I would try some two cycle oil in the plugs... how's your compression? If you have spark air fuel and compression and timing... then engine must run...

Check position of neutral safety switch.

I agree with zopperman.. If you have spark and fuel.... you should get explosion..

Is the spark strong?
Is this a points distributor or not?
Checking compression isnt a bad idea at all.
If it was running really good and then all of the sudden it wouldnt run my gut feeling is its something really simple..

Don't know on a '76. Should be under the cowl, somewhere along the shifter cable.

not sure about the year..my serial number is 857he...i located the neutral safety switch..put a test light on it and i have power going in and out and where its wired into the starter silenoid. I even taped the button down on it and it still wont fire. So unless i missed a step weve ruled out the NSS. Anymore suggestions????????

Well, if you have spark in all three cyls... check fuel and compression? Try priming it as you try to start it and see if the bulb stays hard and make sure your engine is actually getting fuel... any fuel leaking out the carbs?

all three bowls fill up with fuel..no leaks...i did leave out one detail...when i took off the cowl on the water before being towed in, i did notice the hose coming out the bottom of the air intake into the motor had slipped off.....not sure what this hose iis for im guessing any unburnt fuel that might run out into the air intake geta put back in the fuel system??

A picture of that hose would be helpful. After trying to start have you pulled any spark plugs to verify your getting fuel to the spark plugs. Also kinda sounds like your key ignition may be your prob. It may be allowing motor to turn over but not allowing motor to run or start. Does your boat have a safety kill switch by ignition or by shifter. This would normal kill the motor in the event driver was thrown from the boat.

ok..checked compression #1 110psi, #2 115psi, #3 115psi..dont know what the specs are, if anyone has an idea let me kno please....i really perplexed by this lol..it makes no sense that it would jus shut down and not start back up at all....

i really dont think im getting fuel to the cylinders.....fuel is getting to the carbs..and after that point it stops...

yeah, that sounds about right.. I'm confused as to why the engine WAS running fine and then suddenly stopped. Is it cranking OK?

If you have spark and fuel in a two stroke, the only thing left is timing. Could have sheered the woodruff key on the flywheel shaft, loose trigger, etc. Check the TDC mark, then timing with a light to check trigger - make sure it's where it should be. If timing is right, back to fuel and spark. Compression numbers matter less than how close together they are. Yours are good.

yep your comp. is fine... Wouldn't shearing something cause the boat to stop WHILE running? I feel like it's something simpler... I'm assuming you DONT have a fuel shut off switch anywhere in your boat?

Re: 76 chrysler 85hp will not run!!!!HELP!!!!

Has to be ignition or spark related. When sprayed starting fluid and didn't get fire then that would rule out fuel prob. Starting fluid is bad for your motor though in large amounts. Have you checked the ignition switch and wire s. Also let's not rule out ground wires at the motor. Any possible blown fuses. Spark to the plugs should be a crisp dark orange to purple spark to all plugs. Crisp purple is best. Sounds like comp. is within range at a minimum that is. Should still run with those numbers you gave. A neutral safety switch would be attached to cable next to the motor and it prevents starting motor while in gear. However if it is shorting out or has loose broken wires then you may be loosing fire at that point. It most likely wouldn't even turn over at all but check it anyways just to be sure.

I woudl check all your wires and look for frayed connections.. your comp is absolutely fine dont worry... mine can be 90 some days and 120 others... its affected by all types of stuff...

if it was ign related... he wouldn't be getting spark??

Re: 76 chrysler 85hp will not run!!!!HELP!!!!

it turns over just fine...strong, fast spin...my only question with timing and again i dont know everything..is can your timing change from the time you cut your engine to the time you try to crank up and go..like i said she was running like a top till i cut it off and would not even fire ONCE and hasnt fired since that day...
