Model 40604R. While dropping the gearcase the water tube came out stuck in the water pump. It appears like it is broken at the very top. I have another tube in my parts motor. My manual does not mention anything about removal. Do I need to remove the powerhead and take it out through the top? Or does it pull down from the bottom?

If your engine is built like my '76 40HP Johnson, then that water tube comes out from the bottom. No need to remove the power head to reinstall. Just make sure you get it back into the opening and it will work properly. Here is a break down of you engine. The red oval is your water tube. And don't bend or break it because a new one, if you could even find one, is shockingly costly at over $80 dollars. I would make one out of some copper tubing before paying that... Hope this helps.

Thanks. The reason I asked is because yesterday I tried to pull it down through the exhaust housing. I had the motor laying down on the floor and i pulled hard and it did not move. Next time I try I will get my hands up in there as high as possible .

I just tried again and with the motor upside down i pulled on it with a large pair of needle nose pliers. I lifted it right off the floor and it did not come out.
