I got a 1976 Evinrude model# 25602E from craigslist. I'm trying to fix it up as a summer project. It doesn't seem to want to spark at all. I got new spark plugs yesterday, and put them in. It still doesn't spark. I'm thinking it may be something electrical. I checked the engine FAQ and a few pages of threads back and saw nothing about testing the electrical system. How do I go about testing this?

Start by disconnecting the kill switch wires that run under the flywheel; sometimes they short out the system.

I'll try disconnecting the killswitch wires. Give me about 5 minutes so I can pull the flywheel and take some pictures for you guys.

Edit:
Disconnecting the killswitch wires didn't help. But, here's the picture. If you need to see anything really up close, I've got a macro lens so let me know.

It looks like the coil is cracked, if so replace it. The points should be cleaned and regapped. Clean up every thing under the flywheel and reassemble.

Coil is gone; replace it. Be sure to realign the feet on the coil so it is lined up with the flywheel magnets.

The gaps are good. Those were one of the first things I checked. I will replace the coil then. Thanks guys.
