76 omc 175 hp won't go in forward or rev.

have a 76 californa tri hull with a 175 hp omc was boating on the lake at top speed, then felt aloss of power then nothing ! moter still runs, but no fwd or rev. , if you put shifter into fwd or rev and spin prop by hand the lower end sounds like its ingaging can SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP ME!!

I have the same drive setup (1975). Sounds like either the lower unit packed it in, or if you're lucky it's the water pump shaft broke or the splines have stripped in the upper gearcase. I use the term 'lucky' as in the wp shaft is available and not too hard to change, whereas the electric shift lowers are getting harder to find parts for and is more work to repair. I would pull the drive and seperate the upper and lower and see what you've got.

nw redneck, if you move the prop back and forth you can hear that the gears are ingaged in the upper and lower unit. could it be between the motor and the out drive, and if so, what? sorry! new at the boat thing so any help greatly thankfull !!!! ruddog
