Re: 77' 70HP Evinrude Dies/stalls at 2k - RPM

OK well I pulled the motor last night, and stuck it on a stand so I could have the controls right next to it...

I did the "thumb test" as mentioned, and it does create a vacuum. (I didnt see how it could have good compression, and not pull vacuum).

I have officially "given up" on this motor. I don't want to run it as is, and risk burning up a piston from being too lean through the 2-3k RPM range. I installed my Johnson Stinger this morning (gotten good at swapping motors, did the trade in 30 mins!), and robbed the evinrude of the parts needed to make the Johnson run (rectifier, solonoid, impeller, etc.).

Looks like I can still make the FL Boating outing!!. :D (just don't laugh at how dirty the Johnson is, have no money to re-finish it yet)

If I ever do figure out what was/is making the Evinrude not run right, I will be sure to let you all know. For now, this thread is retired!

Well as some of you may have read, I blew up the Johnson that I traded out for....

That being said, I decided to give the Evinrude one last go around...

I fixed it!!!!!!!!!

This may sound corny, but I showed a pic of the motor to a mechanic, and he asked me where my mid-section (Ex housing) plates were that bolt on just under the motor... I said I hadnt painted them yet, so I hadn't installed them. He also asked about my cowl seal, and I said again I havent put it on, cause I havent painted the cowl yet...

Basically he told me I was getting too much "air"... and I needed to seal the motor up, as they were designed to run with all those items in place. (I also didnt have the air box on it yet either that covers the carbs). With the combination of missing items/gaskets, he said there was too much available air to the motor, and it should be drawing air from the holes up top in back....

Once I reinstalled ALL of the missing items, and sealed it all up with new gaskets, it ran just fine... no more hesitation or stalling.

Guess once again, you just can't short cut things. Not sure if that helps anyone else, but at least my situation is solved.

What all gaskets did you replace? I’m having the exact same issues. Not sure what ex housing plates are?
