I recently got a 1985 15' Henry O Challenger with a 77 Evinrude 70. Both motor and boat were very clean at it was evident that they were maintained way. Both boat and motor were well cared for over the years. The PO last used it 15 years ago and it sat in his garage until I came along. It was winterized by a dealer before its long slumber. I installed a new water pump kit and replaced every fuel line. I was careful to watch as the lower unit was re-installed as not to pinch the grommet where the water tube joins the exhaust housing. When I hooked the earmuffs to it I did not get any water out of the two exaust relief holes. After some running I did see some dribble out of the two holes. I took it down to the ramp and put it in the river. Some water sprayed out at idle but it was not until the thing was under throttle did the spray pick up. This motor has no **** hole that creates the thin single stream. I am used to the constant spray out of the exaust relief from my 58 Bigtwin 35. The head of the 70 never got hot as I could hold my hand on the head while it was running. That tells me water is flowing through the water jackets but I am still not convinced that all is OK. Once water is pumped up from the pump into the water jackets what route does it take to exit the engine? Can a temperature gauge be installed on the helm console.
