Unfortunately, those chatter marks are too much for me, personally. I would NOT be comfortable using that crank and that rod. you'd be playing games on borrowed time. i'd say less than half of motors that are blown are not rebuildable without new internals, and these old girls just aren't worth the expense. better off finding a good used powerhead. Have you tried facebook marketplace? It's like outboard heaven, and beats craigslist by 100 miles.

Darn. Not the news I was hoping for.

Can't find anything on marketplace either. Freaks me out to think of buying one sight unseen off of ebay anyway, but not sure what other option I have at this point. May just have to wait for one to come up that looks reasonable. Was hoping to rebuild this one and remove a number of unknowns associated with buying something off the internet...

I hear ya... but i've gotten lucky a few times off ebay this year. Picked up an absolutely mint 88' 40hp powerhead, shipped, for $220! I swear it can't have more than 20 hrs on it tops. So they are out there. The good ones on ebay go in a second, so set your alerts and bid quickly!

Well here's one, but he says that it measured between 90-100psi between the cylinders. Am I right in remembering that above 100psi is ideal for a healthy 3 cyl? There are a couple of others on ebay that I have questions into sellers on, but no one seems too eager to respond to questions, and folks don't seem to like to provide too much info other than "ran great!"

I'd say a bad amateur poker player would have better odds against card sharks than with an E-Bay motor with as-is no return policy in case it is defective.

They can promise the moon for you, but as soon as you pay for it, then it's your problem. Not theirs anymore.

All they have to do is prove that they gave you accurately the product listed. Not that it is guaranteed a good running engine.

Auto salvage lots often times give at least a decent 15 to 30 day defective exchange policy in case you get a clearly proven defective product.

Two words sum up that engine listing, forget it.

that one looks fairly clean, but not worth $450 in my opinion. As the other guys said, it is a gamble. I only spring for 2 and 3 cyl powerheads on ebay if they look mint, will pull the heads off and take pics, and cost under $250-$300 shipped. for example: I just got back from picking up a 1987 50hp evinrude short shaft. super clean. Got the guy down to $200 for the whole thing. no spark, easy fix.

Well folks, I quickly pulled the trigger on an '84 Johnson 90hp vro outboard that's been sitting for about 10 years. Was owned by a boat and VW mechanic. Clean for its age, couldn't properly do a comp test on it unfortunately, and wanted to put in a new impeller, fuel lines, clean carbs etc before trying to start it. Also forgot to bring muffs to the sale or I might've attempted. I know that "it ran when it was stored" can be flawed on many ways, but I have a hunch that I scored about as much as these old cylinders. So that'll be another thread, but for now I'm gonna hang the 70hp on the wall of shame and wait for a good deal on a used powerhead, then just sell the whole thing.

Thank you all kindly for your help and time with the old motor!!! Now onto the slightly newer old motor...

I would pull the 4 intake bypass covers.-----Just 6 small screws each and a $2.00 gasket.------Allows you to inspect pistons and rings.
