The LU of my engine has been off several months. The shift shaft on the unit has been moved and the lever on the engine has been moved. how do I orient them before reassembly to insure proper shifting?

You will want to put the motor and gearcase into neutral before reassembly. It is easy to set the MerControl to neutral. Now carefully turn the shoft shaft with a cresent wrench on the base of the shift shaft until it is in neutral. Make sure the LU is in the correct neutral (there are two).

I am not sure that I understand about 2 neutral positions in the LU.

Some of the LUs will show neutral with the shift rod in either of two positions. This has the effect, upon reassembly, to switch forward and reverse on the MerControl. The best way to make sure you have it correct is to see which way the shift rod turns when the control is shifted from neutral to forward. See it the LU goes into forward if you turn the shift rod the same way from neutral.
