Does anybody know how to remove the trigger assembly from a 78-79 Merc I6? I'm assuming that you have to pull the distributor, but I can't for the life of me figure out how it comes off, and I don't want to force anything if I don't know. I have the cap off, but the rotor surely doesn't pull off like a car rotor (which makes sense cuz' it's upside down). I've seen pictures of a long shaft that the rotor is attatched to, but don't know what to make of it yet. Thanks for your help (and patience with us newbies!)

First you need a manual, these are very expencive parts. Just breifly the dist. wheel has to come off, with the dist cap removed, remove the link rod to the throttle arm, remove the 3 bolts and nuts that hold the dist. hsg in place drop the dist out of it's mount on the engine. Next bend the lock tabs down on the round retainer nut on the top of the dist. hsg and remove the nut, drop the hsg out of it's swival hsg. Then you must remove the top bearing from the hsg pry thru the 2 holes that are under the nut, then remove the hex nut on the rotor shaft( use care the rotor is over $100) with the nut and spacer tube removed support the timing disc so not to bend it or break the trigger arm off, gently tap the rotor out of the hsg. Be sure to keep track of up and down on the timing plate Good Luck--Bob

Thank you. I'm assuming that you have to pull the flywheel off? I tried it but can't get to the innermost of the 3 bolts holding the distributor assembly onto the block. Any tricks to avoid flywheel removal, or must it be done? Where can I get the tool? Thanks again.

I think you will have to pull the flywheel.

You must use the tool - available over parts counter - or NAPA too I think.

-W
