Re: How to lay up the material on transom

Re: How to lay up the material on transom

There was one attempted bad repair done for sure. Just not sure if from factory wood was added in 2 layers separated by glass. Bottom was rotted through all the layers. The top indentation (see outside repair picture bellow) was rotted through, but the outside was separated by the layer of matt and resin and was good. That is where the transom makes a curve. So we kept it.

We had to fill in just the 6x4 inch triangle with peanut butter on each side because of the curvature of the outside skin

Prying out old wood with chisels and pry bars.

grinding - the messiest part of dealing with fiberglass.... good thing we had industrial mask. Previous repair was stuck on the gell cote. Poly resin does not stick to gell cote...... I pried it up with a screw driver in couple huge chunks.

Re: How to lay up the material on transom

hi.....sorry im just jumping in here....

i was asked to look in on this.....

i would have taken the entire transom wood out......the top portion of the transom ends before the curve....

you will now have to remove the top layer of glass skin on the existiing top half of the transom.

you will need to properly secure the new key hole with the rest of the transom....this will mean glassing it.

to add the glass to the new boation and then glass over and tab on to the old glass....you will not have the correct flatness and parelleism you need for the inner t plate.

as well......the bond of the glass (transition area between the new and old) will create difficulties, as you are bonding mechanicaly to the old glass and not the wood under it.

that method will give you a weak bond.....

you might try and grind off the top layer of glass on the old part......then glass the whole area.....but keep in mind flatness and parelliisim.

It hard to get the "whole" picture from there pictures.... I will try to snap a better perspective of the curves we have to work with. Here is a side shot of the transom:

02_transom_curve.jpg

As you can see from this shot, the ring area around the transom plate is made flat and pushed into the transom:
45_outside.jpg

the wood that we glued in is flat. 2 sheets of ply bonded together. All the surrounding areas are lower then the wood we put in. This is how much wood was in the transom from factory. The top of the O curve is the "push-in" you see in the above picture.

2-3 layers of 1708 with epoxy will go over this to tie into floor (gel cote grind out) and all the way around.
Do not worry Oops it will be flat and paralel to the outside! I read your extension job post 2 times over.

Your work has answered a question I have had about the A19 boats for a while. I have heard no wood, some wood in transom. Nothing like most of typical f'glass boats. ? - does the motor mount screw into a wood piece under the floor?

keep up the great pictures

Re: How to lay up the material on transom

There is wood in the transom. what you see in the picture above is the flat piece of wood 2 feet wide. There are 2 layers of plywood 1/4 thick going up following the curvature of the transom. There is a piece if wood under the liner where the front engine mount screws in. There are no stringers in A19. Structure of the boat is from the foam between the hull and the liner. Boat is from 3 pieces - hull, liner and cap. Liner is bonded to hull and cap is bonded to the liner. They do not make them like this anymore.

Thunderstorms rolled in once I got home from work so was not able to do any more fiberglassing today.

Worked on the engine instead. Changed the lifter cover gasket. Original cork is hard and brittle... no wonder it is leaking oil ;)
Managed to undo 4987 bolts holding the oil pan. Gasket is in worse shape then the lifter cover.....

Found a piece of mangled spring at the bottom of the oil pan.... could be from a seal? or just a random spring dropped into the engine somehow?

Re: Transom Curvature

Hey kanada, how's the transom replacement going? Going to look at a '78 with the 470 - any tips (besides avoid the 470) the price is good enough that if needed a switch to 6cyl or a rebuild of the 470 would not be a problem.

Now Comes the Part Two of restoration.

Detected a soft spot in the floor under carpet.
Cut out around foam pour plug to do some exploring... Had some help too...
exploration1.jpg

And as expected its full of saturated foam..
exploration3.jpg

exploration7.jpg

So cut out a big opening so I can dig out all the foam, rain stopped the destruction...

How do I patch these big cutouts? will have to cut inside front seat bases too....

Here is the factory brochure link

Welcome back

I think you've now opened pandora's box. It looks like the cut outs & foam removal are a good start, not the end..........

I think here is what I need to do:

1. Remove all the foam. Cut out other side and under front seat bases. This give me 4 holes large enough to get all the foam out.

2. Let it dry out well. Can anything speed up the process?

3. Patch the large cutout openings. How to join plywood to the existing floor to make it level?

4. Pour new foam.

5. Fiberglass over repairs. Paint. Add vinyl or soft-deck.

6. Go back to the lake.

For #3. I have fiberglass on top, then plywood bellow. In the middle there is ski locker going front to back. It is bonded to the hull and to the deck creating big U and acting as big stringer. So how do I do a but join that is strong enough between new plywood and old deck?

Glad to see the project back on the board, wondered how it ended when we didn't see anymore last year. Isn't the deck 100% 'glass? Looks like you might make oversize ply plugs for the deck, pull them tight to the bottom of the deck and secure. then glass in the depression. Just a thought Did not think this would happen with a A19 but I guess anything can happen. Don't envy you the job.
