Do you know any service history on the engine? If not, there are other items that should be looked at before the season starts. Water pump, thermostats/ pressure relief valves, lower unit oil, etc. You might want to put carb kits in it just so you know where you are with them. I'd do a compression check before you go any further and buy any parts.

Well, the season is basically over here in South Africa, so I intend to do everything before September which is Spring here and the start of a new water season for us.

PS: I'm be getting my shop manual in a few days time, do they cover everything that needs to be checked and done? Also do they cover tuning carbs?

you did not mention what you compression is. being a 79, probably never been decard either.

I hope you have your starting problems fixed. make sure you have the right spark plugs in this motor some manuals called for a permagap plug which didn't run good in these motors. use l77jc4 for good performance. good luck if you haven't already had good luck.
