I have a 1979 evinrude 100hp model 100993. I have a cylinder, (number 2) that is not burning fuel. The compression check was between 125 and 135 on all 4 cylinders. I have rebuilt the carburators with the excetpion of replacing the core plugs. I replaced the power pack and both coils, plugs and wires for cylinders 2 and 4. I have compresson and spark on the #2 cylinder, and the plug has a little clean unburnt fuel on it, but not a whole lot, I also have gas running down that side of the motor also. I first noticed this once I got the motor when after testing the motor out on the river, after getting back home the plug was still pure white with a little unburnt gas on it. You can pull the plug wire off while the motor is idleing and it does not change the rpm obviously, but the spark will jump out of the boot and hit the plug at about 1/2 inch away. As of tonite my plan for tomorrow is to either check the one side of that carburator, and check the leaf plates in the intake manifold. With the fuel running down the side of the motor more toward the back of the motor it has me thinking that the fuel is leaving the carb and somehow not getting to the cylinder. Any ideas or sugguestions will be greatly appreciated!!! I know this is kind of long, but I wanted to make sure that I gave everyone all the information that I knew of since it was my first post. Thanks!

I hate to say this but re-check your carb work again. A white plug usually indicates no fuel.

If you pull the carb down, pull the jets out and visually make sure they are not plugged with debris. Those original fuel hoses on that engine are not made to handle today's ethanol fuels. They can break down and black bits of hose can wind up in the jets. Have you swapped plugs for testing purposes-just in case the spark plug is bad? Regarding the fuel leak-is the airbox drain hose connected to the hose barb on the front of the engine? Fuel hose clamp leaking?

Re: 79 evinrude 100 1 cyl down

Thanks for the replies! I am going to recheck my carb work again because a small squirt of carb cleaner in that cylinder carb barrell makes the motor pep up a little bit. I already replaced all the fuel lines with the grey alcohol resistant lines but the damage could of been done before that. I did change out new plugs trying them gapped at 40 thousandths just like the service manual said. The drain hose is kinda rough shape, i might recheck it but no leaks on new gas lines. Where does that airbox drain hose go anyways??? This weekend I am going to recheck that carb and pull the core plugs that I didnt last time to check the orfices because for some reason I am not getting fuel since I have good compression and spark. I will let you know what happens and what I come up with, any other opinions or suggestions are appreciated!!!! Thanks

Alright I got it working right now. The jet in the bottom of the carb was stopped up. It runs 23.5 mph at 4500 rpm. I posted on the prop forums on figuring out a prop for 5100 rpm but no replies yet

For longest life, you should prop your engine to run right at 5500 or just slightly higher. 5100 is on the low end of acceptable and won't give you the best overall performance or fuel economy.

Re: 79 evinrude 100 1 cyl down

My service manual shows the acceptible range of rpm is 4500 ~5500, Ive got 1 props ordered so I can get close and find out where the barge runs best at, plus depending on how many people are on the boat and if im pulling a tube or a knee board i wanted a few props to try out while I am out on the water. I ordered a 17p 3 blade solas rubex and a 15p 4 blade solas rubex so i can use one hub adapter and the props be cheaper. Before its over i figure i willl end up with a 13 and prolly one more but i will try these two first since the they should get me around the peak hp rating of the motor at 5000rpm.

I am thinking that if the 15p 4 blader doesnt give the rpm and speed i was i might need to try my 17p or order a 13p 4 blader
