After fixing a leaky line on my PTT I took it out to the river 5 mins away and ran her for a couple of hours and successfully trimmed it out for the first time. Every since I got the boat it hasn't had a strong PTT system, barely lifting and lowering after bleeding.

So now my problem i have just the clickes when I hit the up or down buttons. Its the 3-wire pump and 2 cylinder system. I think I locked up the motor when I was trying to trim out. I was testing the good ole whale tail vs. no whale tale, (yes I know they suck but I don't want to drop the coinage on trim taps, we are hopefully getting a new boat this winter).

So tonight I am going to clean the wires and contacts as well as jump staight to the motor to see whats up. I did a little tapping on the side of the motor since its jsut a starter that goes both ways.

So if those things don't bring hope to the motor not being burnt up I am trying to figure out how hard it would be to build the motor. And if I can't do it how much might a electrical shop rebuild it for.

Has anyone here rebuilt theirs? I searched but didn't come across too much success.

You might take the motor apart and clean it up. It is a real simple design, with two brushes. Clean the commutator with extra fine sandpaper, and clean out the grooves. There should be a bi-metal overload switch. Sometimes they get dirt in between the contacts.

I have probably rebuilt 10 of these pumps in the last year...heres what i think might have happened to yours: Inside the commutator (or end plate) is a bronze bushing that the upper armature shaft spins in, if the pump is not used much or left to sit to long sometimes the armature shaft will lock up inside that bronze bushing and when you try to turn the pump the armature can't spin freely so it tries to spin that bronze bushing along with it causing a huge electrical load on the armature resulting in armature failure...you'll know if this is the case when you try to seperate the commutator from the field and frame...it should just lift up off the armature shaft, but if its frozen you will have to pry the commutator off the end of the armature shaft...most of the time the bushing will pull out of the commutator but it does take some prying to get that end plate off if frozen..

I beleive mine is the one with the pump and res. as one unit. Once I take the bottom plate of with the valve is everything visible from in there?

Anyone have a good diagram of this?

My 86 ptt was doing this also. I found out I had hooked the big red wire to the wrong spot on the starter solenoid. It was clicking both solenoids w/ the switch but no pump. I hooked the main red to a constant power w/ key on now and its back to good. I hope your problem is somthing w/ wires, not replacement pump.

There should be two screws (bolts maybe) that are located on top of the round motor casing above the PTT resevoir. The motor will come off, straight up.

OK I took a peek into it and found that the brushes are messed up. one is broken and one was stuck. So is there a way to buy the top "cap" or should I just rebuild the one I have. I can't seem to see what else can fail. I cleaned it with a rag but what else can I clean it with?

Chris, where is that switch at? I have never seen the inside of a motor before but I understand how it works. I don't think the winding can fail or the armature either. So what are my options?

Could I purchase just the brushes from a local electronic store/shop?

Take a look at crowleymarine.com or dougrusslee.com and see if the brushes are available. Second choice is to match them up, however, I do not have a good source for brushes in mind. The overload should be on the inside of the motor, on the field.

Thanks for the responses Chris, I have found a new cap online at another retailer for about 30 bucks. I can buy the brushes from crowley but i guess yo ujust solder them to the old leads and assemble it correctly hopefully. I might try autozone with the cap in hand and see what I can find.

Well ordered some brushes from Napa last night should be here this after noon. They were the only ones thay had available. I will need to file them down a hair but should work great. So if they don't work i am out 5 bucks and a day and I could order the cap or the brush set online still but I hate to pay $10 shipping on a $3 brush set.

I got the brushes installed but they aren't a sure thing match to the stock ones. I may by the ones from crowley and keep these as spares. It runs super strong down but is really slow on the way up. Chris, I just read your post again about cleaning the communicator with sand paper.

It was a good experiment overall, replaced the brushes and it worked but I should be able to get it to run close to the same speed/ sound in both directions. I understand that that motor has a larger load fighting gravity with the weight of the motor on the way up but it shouldn't sound like its on its last leg.
