how much would it be to have new rings installed in this engine? anyone work on outboards at a shop? i have it completely dissasembled except the pistons are still on the rods connected to the crank. i honed out some rust that was in the tops of the cylinders. and the bores are fine and within specs. how much would a shop charge just to put the rings on and install the pistons into the block. nothing else. i just dont have the right compressor to get everything in at once and id probably break them anyways.

Before you took it apart, you might have been able to get an estimate. Right now you'll be looking at time and materials. All estimates are off. You have to look at from the mechanic's point of view. They ain't gonna guarantee Your work. They have no idea if you did it right or not. That would be my answer, no estimate and no guarantee.

Use large black tyraps and beer cans or even just wide tyraps to compress the rings...
Easier than usng the real merc compressors I have heard
I set mine one at a time.

im pretty confident about my work ive rebuilt almost every different type of engine and motor known except these!! if it goes pop pop pop i can fix it but to get the whole assy. in at once is a bit challenging without 6 compressors and who knows what other special ring tools for these works of art. but i was really wondering how many hours that would take. i can get an idea from that. all i need them to supply is the rings. the engine was redone before i got it but the moisture got into it from sitting. i dont think it was fogged. it even has the hone marks from the last builder. but i took out .003 more after i honed out the rust. the bores are straight. within .002 of each other believe it or not!

what happens after i dissconnect the rod caps are there needle bearings in there? will they all fall out or are they in a cage? whats the torque on the rod nuts?

how come all the diagrams ive looked at for this engine, only show two sets of rings needed when there are three grooves on the pistons with three rings on them?
i was goin to try the beer can thing but all i drink is corona so... off to the neighbors!

Newer pistons have 2 rings. Older ones took three.

if you use the cans and tie wraps.... make a string sling and slowly lower thecrnkshaft in... use 2 people one to lower and you to make sure they go in right.

Just so you know, te rod bearings are loose with cages. I think there are 16 roller bearings per rod. If you do end up removing these, keep them seperate by cylinder, and use some grease to stick them to the bearing surfaces, while you reassemble.

180 inch pounds is the torque spec on the rod bolt nuts. However, the factory manual says to throw the old bolts and nuts away and to use new ones. As for putting grease on the roller and needle bearings, Merc makes a grease for that, it will wash away when the gas-oil mix hits it. Some greases are a little less cooperative in that regard.

well i ended up doing them one at a time. the all at once just wasnt working for me! thier all in now and gettin er done!
