'79 Johnson 35 Preventive Maintenance

I've got a '79 Johnson 35 hp (Model 35EL79A). I've had the motor for about 3 years and it has been great to me. Aside from new starter brushes and the need to clean the carb on about 12 times now (my own fault, didn't winterise it and kept trying to run old gas) it has been damn near flawless. However, because the motor is older and I'd like to keep it around for a while, is there any advise you can suggest. <br />I change the gear oil in the lower unit every year. I no longer try to run old fuel. I run a new fuel filter.<br />Is there anything else I should be doing to keep this motor alive. Water Pump, etc??<br />Tyler

Welcome to iboats.<br /><br />I'd say the most important part of the motor is probably the water pump impeller. If you haven't ever rebuilt your water pump, it's long past due. Also, run fuel stabilizer all year. That way the gas won't go stale on you nearly as quickly. After each use, disconnect the fuel line and let the motor run until it dies before trailering the boat. Gas can't go bad if it ain't in there.

My only fear of taking the lower end apart is for the bolts. I have an older Honda 7.5 and when ever I try to turn a bolt... snap. I imagine the water pump in the 35 is located similarly to in my 7.5?<br />Tyler

That's half the reason to replace them frequently. If you exercise those bolts, they won't corrode up on you. You take a small easy job and turn it into a day-long challenge.<br />Coat the bolts in sealer before re-installing them. If water can't get in there, they won't corrode.
