I found a 79 40hp Johnson and am thinking of trading my 95 28hp Johnson for it.

It would be for a 24' pontoon. I have concerns with a motor that old. Were those good motors? Would I have enough of an increase to make the risk worth it?

Thanks

Re: 79 Johnson 40HP

Well, a '79 is only 32 years old. If it has had good care it is probably as good as new.

But. . .

It was rated at the powerhead, not the prop. Probably only makes 34-35HP at the prop.

The '95 28SPL, on the other hand is rated at the prop and is the same basic engine as the 30HP, but without extras like VRO, PT&T, etec.

Either way you are looking at increasing HP a maximum of 4-5HP and getting a 32 year old engine vs. a 16 year old engine.

It is very unlikely that you would realize any noticable gain.

Even if the 40 (really about 34-35) is perfect it is not a fair trade for the 28 (really 30).

Thanks for the great info, JB.

That has definately sealed my decision.
