'79 merc 40hp wont stay running

I have a '79 Mercury 40 hp starts and runs fine for a few min. then dies and has no spark till it cools. it has a new cdi switch box. could this be the stator? If anyone could help me ,thanks

Well, I am no expert by any means. I am experiencing a similar issue on a '76 85 hp Mercury. I did notice that my pee stream was weak and I just ordered a water pump/impeller kit and a manual. Because all of the boat shops around here are booked for 3 weeks. Mine will start great, run for about 5 minutes and shut off.

Yes thats prolly b/c its getting hot due to bad water pump this is not my issue,good luck with the shop bill

It sounds like the stator has a high probability of being bad.

No shop bill. I did it myself, then rechecked my compression. 120 on all 4 cyl. now she runs fine.

Hi i Have a 79 40hp too do you have electric start or pull start i have both. I had to put a new stator on it then i had to clean the carb real good. if ya cant get the jets out dont try to force them take a piece of wire and run it through them till ya can see the wire in the next section of the bowel.i got mine running fine now. you can get that stator here in iboats for $175 it worth paying for a new one. just be carefull when you put the flywheel back on mine was hitting the stator, sparks were flying i put a spacer in it and now it all good. if ya need more help e-mail me at skole79054@aol.com i have some other spare parts for our 40hp engine that ya mite want i have an extra engine. let me know Shawn...
