Re: 8 Hp Evinrude Wot Problem

Ya been there done that (cars , boats, lawn mowers, snowblowers) , that's called action before brain says bad idea, at least I know I have a good heart :D

Cowl off, was there any evidence of exhaust coming up from under the powerhead, the old 9.5's used to choke on their own exhaust and would nit run properly with the cowl on, long cured in 1986 but worth a question. I still think it's all carb.

that's great you think its all carb because i would hate to find out how hard it is to change that base gasket....... it's pretty clean down there and i dont see any smoke or even smell anything for that matter (with back pressure in the water of course). just took off the screw and the screen is clean. whats next on the list..... yea i read about that somewhere that they did that hoping mine wasn't doing that.... man i hope your right im gonna be one happy camper.... or boater

Base gasket isn't hard to change so long as you have the tools and time. Pull carb, inspect, clean. Seriously, I bought a honda 8hp horizontal shaft engine used from a guy last year, it ran like garbage when I got it, it took 3 x 2 hr cleanings of that carb in skin stripping carb cleaner before it would run right and I couldn't see any of it. Carbs are VERY sensitive to debris/rust/varnish, the idle and high speed orifices are the size of a thick needle, 1 piece of sand trapped in them will change everything.

Re: 8 Hp Evinrude Wot Problem

The only adjustment is the idle circuit, screw in idle needle all the way gently seating, back it out a turn and a half and set it at idle where it runs best, there is no high speed adjustment.
