I need help I have a 80 (i think) FS914150-J25TELCRD that has started running rough. I did the new gas/plugs and when I push the choke in and accelerate the motor, it dies. It looks like there is water spray coming out of the twin exhaust ports. Is this normal? These ports are located 7-10 inches below the motor. There is a stream from the water pump above this.

The "CR" within the model number of J25TELCRD identifies your engine as a 1984 25hp Johnson.

What are the compression readings? Do you have spark on all cylinders that will jump a 7/16" gap with a strong blue lightning like flame.... a real SNAP?

Is this engine new to you, or have you had it for some time and it's run fine in the past? Spark plugs should be Champion QL77JC4 plugs, gapped at .040.

Thanks Those were the spark plugs, but I did not gap them. They looked closer that .040 I have had the motor since 98. Is the water stream/spray out of the exhaust ports normal? I'll pull the plugs back out and properly gap them. We use the boat a few times in the spring and fall to haul our hunting gear and to fish.

why do you push the choke when you accelerate? that only floods the motor.

Re: 80 Johnson

I have 3 (three) knobs on the front of the motor one is the elec.start, kill, and one that is labled primer. The latter I refer to as the choke. It appears to work off vacum, and you pull it out when first starting the motor and push it in after it warms up.Is the water spraying out of the twin exhaust ports just below the motor a concern?

those are exhaust relief ports when it idles, what you have is normal.

Re: 80 Johnson

on the upper front of the carb is a slow speed adjustment knob, use the first section of this to adjust. if it doesn't help, i think you are in for a carb cleaning and rebuild kit. pay special attention to the high speed jet, behind the drain screw of the float bowl.

Re: 80 Johnson

Thanks for your help. I have tried adjusting the carb knob both clockwise and ccw to no avail. This motor started running rough after I had dumped some gas from another (metal) gas can in last fall. I assumed it was bad/dirty gas and hoped it would clear up when I put in the plugs and new gas tank. The screen looked clean when I took it off of the filter on the side of the motor.

Re: 80 Johnson

Adjusting carb makes no difference + bad gas = carb rebuild.

About $100 to have a shop do it or $25 to do it yourself.
