80 mercury runs like crap

i have an 1983 80hp mercury. we rebuilt the carbs because it would not run in gear but would idle.now it still idles great,but you put it in gear it dont want to get up and go. it just runs like crap.if anyone could give me an idea on what to do i would be greatful for any help......

Can you be a little more specific. What you've described could indicate many different problems. I'd run a compression check first. Then check the timing. Get back to us with some details.<br />Good luck.

Howdy. Good advice above. Have you tried pumping the primer bulb when this happens? If that makes her run good you have a fuel starvation problem.<br /><br />Try disabling each spark plug, one at a time, while running. If disabling a plug doesn't cause a drop in rpm, maybe even a stall, that cylinder is not making power for some reason.<br /><br />Don't do these tests instead of the compression check and plug inspection that Backlash and Crazyray recommend. Do them in addition. <br /><br />You should always know what condition your compression and plugs are in, even when you are not having trouble. You will often find that you are not having trouble BECAUSE you monitored the health of your engine and prevented trouble.<br /><br />Let us know what happens. It could even be a ski rope wrapped around the prop shaft, or lower unit trouble.

Oh geez...I think 12 footer is taking my "check the simple stuff first" philosophy to the extreme with his "ski rope around the prop" suggestion. (I'm just jealous 'cause I didn't think of it...) ha, ha, ha...<br /><br />His comment does echo the point that more specific info & symptoms are needed in order to begin narrowing down your Merc's problem.
