Well, seems I got a rude awakening to boating..have posted prior so I won't go through it all...anyway..since removing the sterndive and poping off the upper gearcase..I gently tapped the gears out with a wooden dowel hoping not to damage anything..the upper horizontal shaft was missing the end bearing and the gear teeth are a little chewed up..not that bad though..i think they chewed up the bearing as the lower is completely seized..question is..can i install the gears out of the one I purchased that doesn't have the true steering...look the same with same 21/17 teeth...the rear bearing seat has a few little scrapes on it as does the vertical bore where the o ring seals..are all these casings the same minus the true steering..?? Looks to be another learning experience, not that's there's anything wrong with that...

The gears will work fine. There is a relatively easy way to get that bearing race out. Gring a goove in it with a Dremel and a nice stone bit. You may have to grind all the way thru the race to the housing, be careful not to gring TOO much out of the housing (a little won't hurt). It will fall right out.

The bearing and race are Timkens, available at Miller Bearings or any other bearing retailer.

Thanks for that tip...will do..just wanted to know if the 400 and 800 gear cases are the same other than the internal gearing..in other words, can I turn a 400 into an 800 just with gearing...thanks again

From the looks of things, it does appear it would work. I believe that you can do that. Just don't bet the farm on it... I've never attempted it.

Do you have the Timkens part number or specs on the bearing and race..? I'm sure if you don't mention Marine application, it's a fraction of the price...thanks for your time and i'll let you know how it works out..

I think the short answer to this question is NO, since the 400 lower gear case HOUSING is completely different than the 800 lower. The 400 hub is smaller, and the prop shaft has 13 splines as opposed to 15 on the 800. I am not as familiar with the 400 uppers but would expect the shafts to be lighter duty (the 400 was used primarily with 4 cylinder motors), and maybe a different housing too.

However, it doesn't seem to me that you are really trying to turn a 400 into an 800. Instead, if I understand correctly, you are taking a 21/17 upper gear set out of a pre-800 case (which I don't believe is a 400), and putting it in your 800 case. This should work out fine, per the replies above.

Good luck!

Do the OMC part numbers cross reference at a bearing retailer..??
