Gear ratios in the upper and lower unit. <br /><br />400 lower is 13.26<br />800 lower is 14.26<br /><br />400 upper is 21.18 and used only on 4 cyl motors.<br />800 uppers vary from 21.20 to 21.16 depending on engine package.<br /><br />If you exchange a 400 in place of an 800, your performance will drop and you will burn up the drive over time.<br /><br />Doing the reverse will cause a major drop in performance.
