V6 lowers from 1979 & up will work. So will the V4's but he'll have a different gear ratio and different propshaft splines. The smaller V4 gears may not last as long, depends on the set up.
The V6 lowers fro 76-78 will work but you'll need the intake manifold and all the linkage from that year powerhead.
Thanks Dhadley, I may have one from ebay off a 86 150 HP. I'm wanting to use the same prop and make the switch as easy as possible.

No problem. The 86 will be a direct swap, no big deal. Be sure to use the shift rod height setting for the 81 175 mid section. Most likely the same but check anyway.
