82 55 hp has no cdi box?

My dad bought a 1982 Evinrude 55 hp outboard tiller handle. It runs great on the stand. I am beside myself on this ignition though. It has NO CDI box. The wires come straight from the timing plate under the flywheel to the coils.

Model tag says OMC corporation

on www.marineengine.com I can't find the model number in their listings. But when you call a dealership they say it's an 82 however the 55 hp doesn't show up until 83 and even then they don't show this model number.

Anyone run across this before.

That is a valid model number. It is a 1982 COMMERCIAL motor. That makes it hard to find parts lists for it. An Evinrude dealer should be able to help. OMC made some motors with the CDI entirely under the flywheel, except for the coils. That obviously is what you have.

That is a commercial, not recreational, motor model number.

Actually, never have I. But it is done all the time on lawn mowers and chainsaws.
