'82 Evinrude 70 - Shifter detent fell out???

Hi Guys,

Bought a neglected '82 Evinrude 70hp thats stuck in Forward. Dropped the lower unit and low and behold the shift rod was loose, took the shift rod cover off and the shift rod and shifter detent came right out, attached!! Just came right out in one piece, like it was never "in" in the first place. I believe there are supposed to be pins holding it in there? Some pics:





How do I get the detent back in it's housing? Do I have to do a full teardown of the lower unit?

Found a few metal shavings in the gear oil but nothing too crazy.

You will have to do a complete tear down to reinstall

Dang, so no way to pop it back in?? without pulling the whole thing apart :frown:

Nope, but its not super hard to do. You may as well put in a new lower unit seal kit while you are at it.
