Added text to photo. Hard to tell but shift shaft doesn’t line up perfectly will have to push over a bit. Can’t tell for sure if it stayed in neutral while reinstalling.

That pin is painful to put in, I spent an hour trying to get it in. I’m not sure how many f-bombs were thrown but there was a lot. Not the best engineering put into that. Time for a drink, finish up tomorrow hopefully.

Yeah, that pin sucks to install. Especially when you have to fight with all the little rubber hoses in the way. I've had my leg off maybe 30 times over the years and it never gets easier. I've started to combine water impeller with carb cleaning - much better accessibility.

What got me into this mess was the fact that there was very little water flow out of the water indicator nipple. The hose and fittings looked old so I didn't want to mess with them. So I changed the cooling water pump. Started motor again today with muffs on, still very little flow, so I took off the hose and found a tiny rock from sand wedged in the nipple. Lessoned learned. Shifted into F and R and that seems smooth also. Next test will be on the lake. Thanks so much to everyone who contributed to helping me out. Now I just have to buy a new speed indicator fitting, mine broke off when I dropped the LU without removing the hose. Another lesson learned...

Just a follow up, everything running great. Just one thing I want to check on though, the shift shaft seal came out while I was trying to reinstall the LU. I was not able to get it back in place properly, so I left it for now. How important is this and should I be trying to get it back into place?

Do you mean the rubber split washer that's about 1.5" diameter? If so, I doubt it matters much.

Ok, thanks interalian, yeah that's the one. It popped out. I'll keep it and see if I can get it in if/when I take the carbs off.
