Control box was working fine then all of a sudden, when i went to go full out it seems that it jump a tooth inside...took it apart and reset it all- works a few times then jumps again and i can,t go back to neutral unless i take it apart again. do i need to replace both the shift assembly # 0389266 and the shift lever #390610 both parts are worn out
what would cause it to break? shift cable improperly adjusted or worn cable
thanks

Re: 82 Johnson control box

You should be able to adjust the cables but you need to take a look at the internals to make sure nothing is broken inside. I had to rebuild mine. Which gave me the reason to lube everything inside while I was already in there.

Took a while to track down the parts as Johnson/Evinrude no longer make them.

If you should need them there is a company that makes the parts u will need the link below will take u to their site then just enter either the johnson/evinrude part number 390610 or the Mallory part number 9-71101. They also make a replacement part for johnson/evinrude part number 397272 which is Mallory part number 9-71100

These parts are NLA from Mallory and BoatingBuddy. Best bet is buy a new teleflex control box.
