http://www.iboats.com/mall/index.cg...8-5636&**********=965458252&*******=679919604

Something is afoot here and it would behoove you to figure it out before spending a lot of money on the wrong starter.

Definitely compare your starter to the picture of the 18-5636, I'm quite sure you don't have the bracket shown at the top of the 18-5636. Also I bet the starter gear is the wrong size, and as you said the electrical conn is in the wrong place.

As far as I know all '70's and up 99 C.I. Inline 6's mount the starter at top and bottom by split brackets, and the starter had rounded pads at top and bottom, cushioned with rubber to mount with. Not a separate mounting bracket as shown on teh 18-5636. I think there must be wrong info in the Sierra book, and if you go online it still shows the wrong starter. Don't know where to go now!!!!

Unless you can physically compare the starters, it'd be hard to tell which is the right one. There are others in the iboats pics that look like the right one but can't tell for sure in the pics.

Maybe this'll help, the chart shows the starter to have a 10-tooth gear:

http://www.rodnreel.com/dmarine/stam.htm

Now, I suppose the other possibility is that the picture is wrong, but then how do you know that either?? Just about every site I've found says the correct # is 18-5636.

Quite the mystery. Let us know how it turns out.

P.S. looks like the aftermarket starter at
www.oldmercs.com is the cheapest.

HTH.........ed
