I just put a NTU 83 Evinrude 50hp engine on our boat.

I fired it up and it started right up but won't stay running unless I keep tapping the primer every few seconds. I'm thinking the carbs are needing rebuilt but was wondering if there was anything I could try before rebuilding?

Well, since it started right up....the carb(s) sound OK. I'd would start by looking at the fuel pump and it's tank (with hoses first).

The tank and hoses are from the old motor so I would think they're ok. How do I test the fuel pump?

You can pull the hose to the carbs after you have primed the motor and then start the motor briefly and see if it shoots lots of fuel out the outlet from the fuel pump.

well i found that the first thing i would want to know is how long the motor has been sitting around. If sitting clean the carbs, check the pump, and flush the lines. Always good practice. Check the plugs. They can tell you alot about your engine. If real wet to much gas. anyways check the pump like he said but go ahead and do the carbs.

Just hit me that when I said hit the "primer" that you're probably thinking I meant primer bulb. I actually meant the electric primer used to start the motor.

Do the carbs on this motor NOT have adjustable slow speed valve? I don't see anywhere to adjust it and I can't find a needle valve on the schematic.

The jets in the carbs are all fixed. No adjustment unless you change them.

Well that makes the rebuild easier!

I can take them out to clean and then put them back in without having to adjust, correct?

Great! Thanks!

That makes the rebuild easier! I hated having to adjust the carb on my old Johnson 28 after rebuilding it.
