'83 merc V200 miss above 1500?

Hi, This is my first post, and I thank you guys for your expertise. My '83 Merc V200 developed a sudden ignition problem while on the water. I think this was due to exposed wiring which has since been replaced. I have worked on it at length, replacing several ignition parts. Here's the symptoms-<br />Seems to cutoff past 1300-1500 rpm where I think one cylinder is missing. Compression fine, carbs fine etc. Top rpm reduced to 4200 @WOT. Takes way longer to get on plane. Replaced both switchboxes, and all six ignition coils. Trigger passes ohm test. Could it be a Stator problem, or advance module? Thanks, Brady

Boy did you waste a lot of money! Yes, it's probably your stator. It has two sets of windings to make electricity. One set for low speed and one set for high. These are well known to fail one or the other sets. In your case, the high speed set. I'm afraid it's going to cost you another $400 or so to fix. If you'd taken it to a dealer to have it serviced, it would've saved you $800 in switchboxes and coils which are not returnable I'm afraid. Sorry for the bad news. The symptoms you describe alone would've lead the mechanic straight to the culprit.

Thanks for your advice. Thankfully, I bought the parts used, at a large discount. What you are describing then is that the high speed stator windings are shot and causing faulty output from the switchbox(es)?

It should be tested first, but sure sounds like it to me. You can do resistance tests on it. I don't have access to the specs right now.
