Hello,

Need your help again. The 85hp motor I have been working on is running really well. The reason I need your help is in figuring out the lastest problem. Which is: When I put the motor in forward gear I sometimes get a clunk, clunk, bang, bang, thud, etc............not always, less likely if I put in gear quickly, more likely if I engage slowly, but this sometimes happens either way. The gear box works just fine after this and the motor runs good. I recently replaced the powerhead on this motor so, I have had everything apart. Do you think I have something out of adjustment or do I have a problem with the lower unit? The thing that bugs me the most is that this problem was not apparent during the first few (5) outings with the replacement powerhead, this problem just began and has been apparent the last two times I have used the boat. Any suggestions or theories would be great.

Thanks

Ron

Not sure about the problem, but one thing, you should not engage into gear slowly, you should push it swiftly into gear to get that "clunk" otherwise you will be grinding it into gear.

Yeah, do like Baxtr said, shift quick. Don't jam it into gear, or push slowly into gear. Just a swift shift will do it. The lower unit will grind gears because they don't have synchros like regular transmissions. Just simple "dogs" that smack together to engage the drive.

Also, don't shift without the motor running or by turning the prop by hand because you can bend shift linkage.

Thanks guys,

I do engage forward quickly almost without fail because, I don't enjoy the slight grinding sound that occurs and has always occurred otherwise. This is a new development, even when I do engage in a swift manner I am sometimes getting a clunk and bang as if the forward gear is not engaging all the way it sounds awful and the motor jumps. Scares my lovely wife half to death thinks we will have to be pulled in to the dock. It will finally catch and then the boat accelarates just fine after that. Do you think I have an adjustment problem or a more serious problem with the lower unit? Are there gears or "dogs" that could be worn that would cause this type of behavior? As I stated in an earlier post, this just recently became a problem, the last two times at the lake. I have no experience working on the controls or the lower unit and need all the advice you guys can give me on figuring out this newest test of my abilities.

Thanks for all the advice!!!

I got finally got out the manual, how to adjust the shift linkage. I made the adjustsments per the instructions. Of course the test at the lake required further adjustments. The way I had things adjusted reverse would not engage unless I had the lever almost all the way back. All the way back means increased rpms. I sure am glad I decided to remained tied to the dock while I was doing the testing! At the end of the day everything was working the way it was intended. No more bing-a-bang-bing-a-boom. I just needed to complete the necessary adjustments required after the powerhead swap This continues to be a learning experience and I sure could'nt do it without all your advice and help!

Thanks again!

Check the adjustment on your linkage, it may have been thrown off a little when you were working on the powerhead.

Sorry I got excited knowing what your problem was and didn't read your last post where you got it fixed.
