HI,

I have been reading this forum (and others) for months and just decided to join. This one has the best (IMO).
We have lived at lake Nacimiento CA for 18 years with no boat:(.
After much looking I have purchased a 16' Bayliner Capri with aAQ125A and 270 outdrive. The Head is new and this thing runs great.
I knew going in that the very bottom of the transom had some rot and have no hesitation about pulling engine and drive to repair.
I am a carpenter and have every tool in the book.
I have seen many post on transom repair but have not seen much on the ones that have the step in them where the OD is mounted. Most are the kind that go strait across.
I am planing on going at this from the inside and it looks like I can remove just the center.
Hope this is clear?

Thanks,
Chris

You'll want to remove the whole transom core as opposed to just the center... aside from the fact the whole thing may be wet, you really need to have the transom as stiff as possible.

The "step" if I understand what you mean is pretty easy... you just need to match the size of the original wood in thickness, height is not critical. The thickness has to be within 1/4" of spec for the outdrive I think.

The whole process isn't hard, it just takes work. Make sure you have a good particulate respirator in addition to your carpenter's safety gear. Label the wires and tubes you disconnect, bag up all the hardware as you pull it, and post your process here, we'll help you with any questions.

Erik,

Good point about replacing the whole transom. After removing the engine and drive it would be a bad move to do the minimum.

Thanks

all rot and wet must be removed or your back in there in a season or two.....its so much work to get in there.....doing it right once is just about the only way
