I am a long time reader, first time poster. I have an 84 90hp Chrysler outboard engine that I have been fighting with since I got it. I just got it back from the mechanic, who said it looks as of the carb had a bad rebuild, which he had to replace some parts. When I got the boat back it started right up, idled great, took off great, but after running for a while it won?t idle at all. In order to get it to go forward I have to slam the throttle down hard as soon as I turn the key to get it going forward. When I put it in natural, and put the throttle all the way forward it idles good, should the engine be roaring with the throtle all the way down in neutreal? compression is good in all cylnders119 to 123. And the primer ball stays hard. Is there such thing as a warm/cold idle? Once I get past idle it runs great.
The boat has no tach, where would I go about adjusting the idle if that is what needs to be done?

Re: 84 charger wont idle when egnine is warm

Is that 84 Charger the four cylinder de-rated 105?

At any rate, warm idle should be, if anything, better than cold. AND: whether it is a three or four cylinder engine, the idle should be rock solid at 700-750 RPM in forward gear. Maximum RPM in neutral with the shift disabled (silver knob or Chrome lever pulled out) should be about 1500 RPM--sounds fast to the ear.

Do yourself a favor and buy a tach--it comes in very handy for setting up the engine and for prop changes etc. When I am water skiing I give the driver an RPM range to drag me, not a speed. Your 1984 engine has Prestolite ignition and you need a 20 pole tach. Teleflex makes one but it is a bit pricey. However, to me it is worth the money. Check right here on iboats--I think they do sell them.

After you tell me exactly which engine it is, I will get back with sync instructions.

Thanks for the responce.

Well last night I got my engine into a bucket and started it up, just barley, had to push the throttle forward in natural to get it running. Hoping it would be running better. And just like at the lake it would not idle, good think is plugs were all wet, got spark. I have a 1984 Chrysler 4 cylinder 90hp charger, with 2 carburetors, and as you stated a 105. I am thinking it may just need to be synced. I am in the market for a tach, kind of wish this boat came with more gauges, all I have is fuel gauge. ohh well. Thanks in advance
