Just spent some money on this motor and put in new water pump. It was running fine for a few weeks. Took it out yesterday and within 5 minutes I could smell hot metal and the water pissing out was hot as hell. Thank God it didnt seize up. So what happened? How can it still be pissing and yet not be cooling the motor? THermostat not fully open? Please help.

Sounds to me like you have a t'stat that has failed and stuck closed.

Thanks. Is it a job to remove the tstat? Have to pull the head off? Can I just remove teh tstat altogether?

THanks

You won't need to pull the head. The t'stat is near the top of the head and secured by a few bolts. You will need a new gasket, but they are cheap. It should look similar to the picture HERE.

OK thanks. I will order parts. Regarding the water jacket gasket, do you use any sealant or anything with the gasket or just the gasket as is? How about torque specs of the the water jacket cover? My manual does not make mention of these, I think. ANy other tricks or anything important when changing the tstat? Ive never done this (as if you cant tell).

I have always been taught that you should not need any sealer on gaskets and to use dabs of grease to hold them in place if need be. This CHART has the torque specs you need. About the only tip I can think of is to just take your time and clean things up good before you put it back together.
