Re: 85-140hp out of the same block? How?
Ha ha ha, Dhadley,

Naw enthusiasm will not change my testing. However, old man winter has pushed it onto the back burner, or completely off the stove.

My engine set idle for about seventeen years without winterizing or any type of care. It was garaged for five years until I move out in the country. There it sat in my back yard for twelve years. So, this past summer I bought a new boat and kept the old 1985 motor and trailer.

Before starting the engine after the long siesta, I replaced the water pump, thermostats, and the lower unit gear oil.

After determining that the VRO was not up to par, I replaced it with the latest four-wire version including the tank and hoses.

The engine starts and idle just like when it was new. However, until it completely warms up it is a little temperamental. It does not take full throttle, although it will take full throttle after a couple of hours crabbing, or trolling for fish. Although it would accept full throttle I did not keep it there over a few seconds because, I was afraid of running lean and blowing a piston. I just used it as a fishing boat and slow poke trolling this past summer.

I will pulled the carburetors this winter and rebuild them. One question, are all the carbs the same or there a primary and secondary carb?

After the engine is running right and a baseline is established, should I lean towards a four-blade prop, or a three-blade prop? Most of my boating will be in the Chesapeake Bay, where I will encounter a few chops at times. I do not usually go out in rough water. But, I can be caught out in some rough stuff at times.

As for the compression, I took it when I first started the engine; it was about sixty to sixty-five across the board. After running it for a while and doing a decarb. I took another test and it was at 114-115 across the board.

Take care, and enjoy the warm weather you guys are enjoying down there.

Regards,

DoferGofer
