symptoms: starts ok idles but but pauses every couple seconds (missing??) anytime I try and put it in gear it dies. Runs very rough shakes the boat. The weird thing is if it wasnt for the pause/studder it sounds fine.

What ive done: checked spark all 3 cyl are firiing, checked compressin with thumb seems ok, carbs were just looked at this summer. Was running ok but lacked power earlier in the summer.

Any ideas help would be apreciated, this is my first boat and would love to get this going for the family. Thank you

Ok. At what speed does it start to shake the boat? I would get a compression tester and make sure you have good comp on all cylinders. Do a decarbon and you may want to get a spark checker and make sure you have good continuous spark both at idle and wide open throttle. Should be a nice crisp purple spark. Are you getting good fuel flow? Does the primer stay firm after priming or does it feel flat? You may need to sink your carbs check floats and adjust you rich-lean mix. Generally one full turn out from lightly seated or closed. If you don't already have a manual then might I suggest getting one. Kinda like swimming with your hands tied without it. Keep on it and good luck.

I aprreciate the advice. the spark is pretty weak on the #1 cylinder, and it does it at all RPM's. The primer stays firm.

your spark should be able to jump 1/4 in in air to be any good inside the cylinder ...do not run it with the plug leads off this bugggers the CDI unit use a spark gap ...
