i am new to boating and have no idea where to start except to change spark plugs and normal mant.i bought the boat on craigslist, the guy started it sounded good.he told me the auto choke was not hooked up and it was cold natured.i started looking on the internet and it turns out he knew as much as i knew....nothing.i found u push the key in to ingauged the choke.i took it out on the water for a field test and it started right up but when i put in gear it bogged down and died.i found another thing out,to push the button in center of throttle and give it gas to just rev the motor. well i done this and it idled up sounded good.then put it in gear and died.i have got one good 10 burst of power from it in gear.where can i begin.

note....the chokes close good but was told the throttle flaps have to all be in sync.

Profile, location?? You might be close to someone who can help??
Don't mess with the throttle flaps just yet.
First,check the compression.
The comp should be close all three within 10# of each other.Post the results.
Top front of the 3 carbs. There is a screw. It needs to be turned in till it just bottoms out GENTLY!!!!!!!
Too tight can damage the screw and base.
Then turn out 1 full turn and leave it there.
Check the gs for water.
Check the fuel pump diaphram. While it's out replace it. It's only $6
Clean the plugs. They should be the permagaps.Easy to clean.

Read this post it tells about low comp.

i am in johnson county tn.i done the test the top two carps read 110 and the bottom was 105 but this was the first time i had it running on muffs and it seemed to run fine it backfired a couple times figured where it was out of the water and it did die a time or two but fired right back up.i thought that might be where it was cold (cold natured),but not posative.i had it on the water twice and both times when i put in gear and gave it gas it died.when on the muffs i put in gear and gave gas and it purred.

You might want to check the "Link and Synch" sticky post. This will tell you how to set the idle properly and at what RPM. If the problem persists, try running the engine (in the water) without its cover to see if it still dies. If it doesn't die when the cover is off (in the water) it's most likely you have exhaust leaks recirculating back to the carbs. When on muffs, the exhaust is not restricted exiting the snout because it is not underwater. When in water, there is back pressure created and the exhaust exits to the idle relief boot. If this boot is torn, it will leak exhaust back into the engine, lowering idle RPM and killing the engine eventually especially when placed in gear.

Backfiring,The air screws you set them like I suggested?
110# is low.
Do it again with a different guage.
Might just be the guage?
Remove all the plugs while doing it.
What's the rpm's? In the drive-1200

i did not mess with the screw yet. I just did the test and bought a new guage i think my battery was a lil weak at time of test.would that cause it to be low.the weather is not on my side so working on it is at a crawl.but i will look at the screw the next time i work on it.and one more question how do i go about testing the rpms.

Got to have some kind of tach. Some timing lights have a tach in them?
They sell a tool, called a Tiny Tach.It hooks to the outboard and gives a good reading.

To buy a tach for the motor, you need a 20 pole tach.
Need to know what year, and or a serial#

ok so i didnt put a tach in but i tryed again.i took to the lake and started right up idled for about 3 to 5 mins and died but always fired right back up with little effort.i put it in gear and we putted along, away from people and started messing with it a lil.my buddy jumps on the controls and we start reving it and go from drive to wide open in gear after about the 5th time of him doing it.it takes off!!! we are gettin it down the lake and after about 2 miles i feel it loose a lil power shortly after that another loss of hp. and finally goes down till it dies i never touched the trottle it was wide open the whole time.now we looked and found a kink in the gas line where it goes into the motor kinda hidden.we get new gas line and take it out and another problem arises.know i dont know all the parts and boating lingo but under the flywheel is a disc that turns as u give it gas,it is held to a bar by a screw that connects two small plastic piviting peices.one of them broke.it is a small fix but hard to get to now the motor wont even idle.i have a couple ?s.does it matter what kind of fuel line i use??? and i would like to know what those peices are.im bout to take it to a marina to have them look at it,and give me a price range to get me on the water, since i dont know what the hell im doing im still learning and again please forgive me for not knowing all the parts names and mistakes in this post...............ps.....i have very little response in the trottle, when i open it up hardly anything moves on the motor

The two plastic pieces are rod control end/s. One to the trigger and one to the tower. They are hard to come by. Got mine at a Merc dealer. Timing will be impossible without it.

thank you...any ideas why it would run for about 15 to 20 mins then die off.it has idled pretty good since i got it,it dies at random lengths of time.and on the 4th time out it ran good after a lil playing with the throttle.i beleive the motor is good. the guy said it had been re-done last year but was not winterized.it fired right up and will run if i just put it in gear and not give any excesive gas.

You mentioned backfires. Backfires can rupture or stretch the fuel pump diaphram. Probably needs changed anyway.
