I have a manual, but directions are different from reality. I'm trying to drop the lower unit, and I dont want to force anything, but it's loose now, think i'm stuck on the shift linkage. Any ideas?

Are you saying you figured it out? The disconnect is below the carburetors.

I see the linkage, just havent quite figured it out, it's not the same as in the manual but at least I'm on the right track.

put 2 bolts back in lower to hold lower. you have a bell crank type shift remove the bottom carb, loosen the center bolt the shift rod will release.
you can see diagram here, follow prompts to your motor, to crankcase.

You don't have to remove the carburetor, but it would make it easier to reach. You should, however, disconnect and move the the control cables out of the way.

You loosen the fulcrum screw on the bellcrank, then spread the fingers of the bellcrank to release the pin.

Click the thumbnail.

Note the position of the barrel swivel at the top of the shift rod: the flat side faces the driveshaft. Be sure that it is that way when replacing the unit.
