I have been told by several people that the
US Marine Force is now the same as a Mercury so I thought I'd try this forum for a timing question.

I have a 1985, 85HP US Marine Force outboard.
#3 Cylinder went out so i got a good used powerhead and installed it.

The engine starts easy but has a mid-range miss but it runs smooth at higher rpm settings.

I have the prestolite ignition system with the TDC mark and the 32, 30, 28 degree marks on the flywheel.

The manual calls for 32 degree when doing a dynamic full rpm timing setup.

I can't get close to 32. I am at least 1" away from that mark on the high side.

I guess that makes the timing 36 to 38 if I had to guess.

I checked TDC and it seems to be right on.

I can set the timing with the static method of pulling the plugs, setting the throttle wide open, and turning the engine over with the starter. From memory I think it is set to 30 or the mark in the center of the three timing marks.

I had set the throttle linkage bar all the way in with no threads showing to start over when timing.
This could be a mistake because the setup originally had about 1/2 inch on both sides of the approx. 4" rod showing threads.

Any idea how I can get the timing set to 30 to 32 on the dynamic timing test with full throttle?

Thanks in advance,
Charles
