85 hp chrysler motor

Hi, I'm new to this forum and boating.
I got 1976 boat with 105hp motor that is bad so I bought 85hp Chrysler.
We got the motor started no problem on the stand before I bought it.
At the time choke solenoid linkage wasn't attached to carbs.
Last weekend I swapped 105 hp with 85 hp and got some problems.
I left all wiring and controls from 105hp on the boat and just wanted to connect everything like it was.
Well I did that and when trying to started it wouldn't start, it does cranks and got spark, fuel is getting to carbs as well.
Once again choke linkage is not connected to carbs as of right now.
While trying to crank it multiple times choke solenoid got really hat and started to smoke until I disconnected battery.
I assume choke solenoid is bad and needs to be replaced.
Can I use solenoid from 105 hp on 85 hp?
What could cause solenoid to smoke/burn?
Any ideas what I need to do to get it started again?

Year and model# always help??? Location,profile?? You might be close to someone who can help??
Sounds like it's wired wrong.
Possible the key switch is defective?Keeping the choke activated??

The 76 wiring probably isin't wired right for a direct swap.
I think ???? after 1980 the marine industry standardized wiring on most motors.
Before, they did what they thought was best.

I live in Lake Dallas, TX 75065

THe chrysler 85hp motor model# 857HD and it is 1972 (just installed)
THe chrysler 105hp motor model# 1059HD and it is 1974 (originaly on the boat)

There is a chance that ignition is bad, I dont have a key for it and I use screwdriver as of right now while I'm waiting for new ignition to come in.

It sounds to me like the choke linkage was disconnected BECAUSE the choke solenoid was constantly activated.

Yes, the solenoid from the 105 will fit and yes, the wiring on both engines should be the same.

I suspect that as of now, the choke is wired to the "I" terminal so any time the switch is on, the solenoid is activated.

When you get your new switch, connect the green wire to the choke terminal "C." Red to "B" yellow to "S" and blue to "I" or "A." To choke the engine for starting you must push in and hold the key while turning to start.

Note that with spark and fuel, on a cold start, with no choke, the engine simply will not start.

I got the choke fixed, but got another problem.
Motor want start at all.
I did take the carbs apart to clean it because one of the baskets came apart.
Took it all apart, cleaned it and put it back on the boat.
Before I put the carbs together I made sure floats are not sticking and they worked just fine.
Motor will not start at all even when spraying starter fluid. It turns over just fine and if gas is hooked up it floods the carbs so bad that gas is pouring out on the back side. I don't understand because I checked the floats prior to installation.
Anyone have any suggestions what to do to get this motor going since it was running prior to installing it on the boat.

Floats activate the the needle and seat to stop overflowing. Did you check them also? No grooves on the needle, No grit between needle and seat, seat deteriorating?

Did not check the needle, what I don't understand is the motor started everytime we had it on stand untill we put it on the boat. Once on the boat we had problems getting it to start thats when I took the carbs apart.
I will do check the needles just to elimate it from being a problem.

gets great spark, its' timed right and got good compression.
