I have an 85HP force outboard that is on an 87 bayliner capri that has had a recent rebuild. The compression on all three cylinders is 120psi. This is the first time attempting to start the engine since i have owned it. (bought it with low compression in #2 cyl... due to carbon buildup sticking the rings in the piston). I have checked the timing with an inductive timing light and it appears to be very close to right on. The engine will fire and almost start and then backfire and die. Any ideas?

check the fuel pump and carbs ,sounds like your getting fuel in one cylinder but not the others, check the floats in the carbs and spark on all three cylinders ,make sure plugs are grounded to the engine block .

Cool, i will check the fuel pump and carbs when I get home, I think I will also perform the carb sync (via sticky on the forum) as well
I will respond with the results, thanks!

A backfire will tear a fuel pump diaphram. Read the wakening a sleeping motor sticky.

Re: 85 HP Force No start.

Thanks for the help guys! I pulled the carbs off, cleaned them (had some small debris in them) and now it fires up and runs! I am going to replace the fuel pump diaphram as it is stretched (I am assuming from the backfires, thank you). Anybody know of a shop in the Portland Oregon area that might carry the fuel pump diaphram? I would really like to get the boat on the water this weekend to shake it out a bit and do some tuning. If not, I will order it online. Again thanks!
