I looked around a bit, but didn't see it... Tips on how to change my prop. I have a 88 Bayliner Trophy Class 17' foot boat. With 85 hp force outboard. It has a 13.5" x 17 prop now... This sound right? Also I have no tach... Just a speedometer that reads in mPH. How hard to install tach? When I checked the speedometer I did NOT realise I had to "lower it" into position. (It was UP) It read slightly over 22mph but the wheel was up as stated. Also had 5 people and a dog in the boat! My other boat a 66' GW with 100 hp Evinrude Starfire SEEMED Much faster. Than my 88 Bayliner. What to expect out of the 17' foot Bayliner 85 hp Force if running decent?

You have a boat 66' GW with 100 hp Evinrude Starfire. Any pictures?
Try a Tiny tach, it works for a 85hp three cylinder Force. Wally world

Hard starting?Do a compression/spark test.
The 17 sounds right.
Installing a tach is easy. The wiring harness has a purple lead taped back.
Find a tach cut the hole and figure out the leads.
5 people should be way over the limit for a 17ft boat.
The speedo pick up(pitot tube)the tip can break and not work right.
Like rip says a Tiny Tach will work till you get the right tach.
The make a bunch of TT so make sure that you get the right one.J

I'll get some pics up when I can... It is a choke spring and a starter away from running again. It needs some serious paint and interior restoration but she was always mechanically sound till the starter failed. Thanks for the reply Rip.

On a side note my prop seems (hell with seems, it doesn't have) a cotter pin or locking nut set up... Appears to just have a regular hex nut locking nut with/nylon at best. Is that normal on an older application? 1988 I think....

88 is just a Nylock nut and spacers.
Just make sure the thrust hub is right or you'll be grinding aluminum!!!

Could you elaborate? How do I make sure the thrust hub is right? I thought it was splined and would only slide on "one way" so to speak?

Picture 400.jpgPicture 399.jpg

Pic#1 is Mercury stuff.#2 is Force.
The prop has the thrust washer setting on it.There is a second one on the bench(not used)It needs the thrust hub and the prop then the spacer with the grooves and a thick washer and the nut(wrong washer pictured).
The thrust hub goes between the prop and the lower unit. It's a solid piece of metal. The splined one goes on the other end.
The thrust hub must fit inside the end of the prop and not have any play.
Post pics of the setup your trying to use.J

Umm... I'll get some more pics up jj... Thanks for helping Me, its very hard to get help here without wiping out the savings!

I already ordered the prop, a 13.5" x 17 pitch. I have one friend that worked on boats a little... I have run that boat twice to see the condition. What you CAN'T see in my pic I realise now is the chunk missing off the end of the only blade not in the pic! (DOH!) I'll get better pics up and thanks for your help and patience. I will also take pics of my Grady White I am close to being able to get the starter and choke spring thanks to the info I am finding here.

Well, It is done... I swapped the prop, no issues far as I can tell the thrust washer seated fine and no play anywhere! Water test tomorrow.
Thanks for the help thus far... BUT the more I learn the less I know! One answered question brings two more new questions.
