85 hp force tilt/trim removed is it ok to run the boat without it?

I have an 85 HP force on a 1989 17 foot Bayliner Capri. I have the t/t off of the boat right now while I get the parts together to rebuild it. my question is can you use the boat with the t/t off? is there any way to lock the motor in the full down position?

You have the whole thing off or just the pump?
Just the pump, it's ok to run like that.
Going into reverse might be tricky.
You might tie it down so it doesn't raise up when put in reverse.

Usually, the transom clamp has holes in it to bolt down the motor in one permanent trim position. There are two ways to do this: With the trim cylinder out, the kingpin will lower itself all the way (trimmed in all the way) thus making the boat to plow through the water. By using a long stud across the clamps you can lower or raise the motor to desire position albeit permanently. The only problem now is when you go on reverse nothing will hold the motor in place and can actually go up. The solution is to use some U-bolts to hold it in place using the holes provided on the ears of the kingpin. If you do not have the holes on the ears of the kingpin, then you will have to U-bolt it through the "ears". See below drawing.

firstly the entire pump, tilt, trim and shock absorber are currently removed from the boat. the PO broke the inlet where the top hydraulic line enters the top of the trim pump.
if i understand correctly i can place a steel rod through both transom holes in jiggz picture then hose clamp around the ears and the steel rod to lock the motor into place. i understand it will be a pain in the butt at launch and recovery but i can use the boat at least until the t/t is rebuilt. plus i can use the top most hole with this set up to trailer the boat.
i will post pictures of the set up i end up using.

thanks

Yes you can use without it and as you say it will be a pain. You will have obviously no trim to adjust your boat, so might pay to play with which hole is best for general cruise.

They originally came without trim or tilt and you had to add it after market in many cases on the Capri. There should be a black lever on the bottom of the engine that will lock it down. Prior to our Bayliner with the 85hp not having trim or tilt when we bought it new we would simply leave the lever unlocked and backing up was never a problem if you didn't jam it into reverse. One time my pops hit bottom hard but as it was unlocked it simply flipped up and caused little damage which was the whole reason for not locking it. It was his little insurance policy for us boating on so many unfamiliar lakes back in the day. The 85 hp is light enough that you can deal without trim as we did for years. You can even pull start it in a pinch.

I'm glad my 100hp came with trim tilt, buggered if I could pull that motor back, but then again my back isn't what it used to be. :p

Remember a plain long steel rod will not do as it will probably fall off. It needs to have nuts on both sides. So you either use a plain rod with threaded ends and nuts or just use threaded rod to start with.

I recall my dad having to muscle that 85 up when I was a kid and time it as we approached shore. When he added tilt and trim to it, it was so much easier. The down side though is that the Tilt/Trim switch was on the dash panel as a toggle switch and so you couldn't work the wheel and the gas while you tilted it. Those 80's Bayliners were pretty barebones. You couldn't even get a radio on the Capri until 1985.

I installed a switch at the transom as well as having one on the throttle shifter made it easy to maintain and flush the motor. IMO why would you want to wrestle with that motor every time you beach etc. I had a 75hp and I wouldn't like to play with that while beaching let alone a 85hp which is only slightly heavier.

Yea get some miles on that girl, then do your tilt/trim when your ready. Won't hurt not to have the t/t, so you can find you sweet spot for cruising.

In my little story it is because the boat came new from the dealer without it, it was 1984 and probably took my folks a few years to save up for it...times were tough then and credit cards weren't utilized like today or readily available. Was the only vehicle they ever bought new and actually made payments on but they still have it.

After 1985 the 85 came with T/T standard.
You could still get it without.
The 50 had it as an option.

I understand why your parents did it jkust, I am talking about today with the OP using it. I would have been 18 when this motor came out, I bet though if your Dad could have added one he would have.

Was it standard on the 4 cylinder motors like my 100HP jerryjerry?
