surprised no one knows the answer to this... thought it would be fairly straightforward... anyone with a running out board i would think would have an idea...

I guess it is pretty hard to give a straight out answer, warm up can depend on air temp, water temp and so on, how long before smooth idle? maybe a minute maybe less, what RPM to warm up at? I guess any revs that it keeps running at, no use going flat out if it will keep running at (say) a fast idle like 1,500RPM.

These engines will tend to lean sneeze at idle when warming up. A fast idle and occasional applications of the choke will keep the engine running during warmup. When the engine quits lean sneezing at idle, you can go off the fast idle. Usually a minute or two.

You should not run above 1500 RPM with no load on the engine. Ease the warmup lever down as the engine smooths out from a cold start.

Re: 85 hp johnson warmup question

see thats the problem... i dont have a warm up lever.. its the old school 2 handle control box, one for throttle other for gear, forward reverse and neutral... it def. worries me a bit because it revs pretty high when it first starts... and i found a fuel leak at the gas tank today =( gotta replace that hose. it was probably the problem to start with but now ive bought a $100 fuel pump and put it on... argh... ::sigh:: ::shrugs:: i dunno... a bit frustrated...

Re: 85 hp johnson warmup question

Take the cover off the carburetors and watch what is happening; at idle, the throttle plates (behind the choke plates) should be closed and perfectly synchronized when your control is in the neutral position. If they are not closed, disconnect the throttle cable, adjust the carburetors so that they do close, then adjust the cable so that it slips on without making any adjustment of the engine linkage.

When your control throttle arm is fully advanced (WOT), the throttle plates should be perfectly horizontal.

sounds like you need to do some maintenance. it should not be doing that. clean carbs/check fuel lines, new correct champion plugs, link and sync, check timing and all linkages.
