please forgive me whoever may read this...
i just bought a 86 bayliner. it is not in my driveway but i'd like to mentally prepare for what i just bought. i have ridden in this boat 5 times and it is a nice boat.
but the guy tells me it is an 85 hp volvo penta outboard. and that it is hard to start, i know my way around engines a more powerful ignition and carb kit is my first idea. but is the outboard part really the engine seems kinda small to me for that kinda power.

Have you tried the internet. It would seem there would be some reference there. You might try a search here as there has been some reference to Volvo penta outboards but I think something like 40 hp.

Are you sure it's not an outdrive, with the engine inside the boat and the drive unit on the transom? I don't think Volvo ever built an 85 hp outboard. If the engine itself is inside the transom, but the prop and other stuff is outside, then its an inboard/outboard, not an outboard.

If that's the case, there's a forum here for those setups and folks will be able to answer your question there.

Re: 85 hp volvo penta outboard??

On checking, Volvo Penta did have an 85 inboard/outboard unit, back in 1967. It was based on the Volvo B18B engine, as used in their cars at the time.

Some internal engine stuff will be the same as the automotive version, but the rest is going to be tough to find, I think. That's pretty old for outdrives.

I could find no reference at all to an 85 hp outboard from Volvo Penta...just the outdrive I mentioned.

If the drive unit is OK, you can probably get the engine working properly, given its shared heritage with Volvo automobiles.
