Thy were good engines but it would depend on what is wrong with it if it's worth the repair bill get a estimate before making up your mind. In today's service shops "It's not worth fixing" is the remark of a talker that don't have the talent to repair the product. It's much less expensive for the shop to hire a talker that a qualified mechanic.

Are you sure that it's a 1985? My 850 is a 1978 and it has the distributor-less ignition.

Mercury 85HP motors with distributors were made up to the mid 70s. The ones made in the 70s were 4 cylinder inline motors, and if the ignition is good and the compression is good and the motor was used in freshwater (exhaust baffle and inner cover is not rotted), it is probably worth fixing. Older 85HP motors(60s models) were inline six motors. After about 1976, the inline 4 85HP motors had the newer ADI Ignition.
