The initial timing is only part of the procedure. You really need to check how far the advance is at high RPMs. Your manual will spec what the total advance will be. If the distributor is not advancing properly, it will effect your power over the entire RPM range.
You can check total advance with an "advance timing" light or use the stickers that you put on your harmonic balancer.
