Hello,

Seriously considering buying a boat here in texas to get ready for summer, but am not sure of the value of this boat. Its an '85 Wellcraft 190 American with a 140hp I/O mercury. Didnt these boats come with a 170hp motor? The guy says that the upholstery has been redone and the wood floor and carpet as well . The nada site says its only worth about $2000. Is this accurate for a boat like this? He is asking $5000 and says that he has about $7000 invested in it.
Is there anything I be careful of when buying a boat of this age? Thanks for any help, as I have 0 experience on boats.

Here are some pics:

the price does seem high for a boat that old. Just 'cause you've got 7000 into it doesn't mean it's worth 5000. the new upholstery looks nice but cheaply done. I do like the way the engine cover opens however. I wonder if it was that way from the factory.

You need to change the size of your photos in photobucket however.

i'd still take yer awl with ya when doing the inspection. look hard to see if ya can find any rot in the transom or maybe ya can see a stringer and give them a poke.
looks respectable to me. good that the center window closes with what appears to be a equal margin around the window. a sign that the deck and stringers may be solid. no sagging.

might be under powered w/ the 140hp, but better that than the mercruiser 470. the 470 is an engine that caution should be used and the buy beware prior to purchasing. the 140, best of what i know is a solid, desired engine. just low in hp.

i don't read much bad about wellcrafts.

my personal dislike which is irrelevant. i'm not big on red.

Thanks for the replies guys. How would I check for rot on the boat?
Are there areas that are accessible without pulling the carpet up? Im fairly mechanically inclined, but have almost no knowledge of boats.

I wouldn't give more than 3K for that boat. If he has 7K into it he overspent what the boat was worth by several thousand dollars. Wellcrafts are good boats but it is 25 years old and not the most desirable drive package. For perspective I sold my 1996 Wellcraft 195SS with 4.3L VP SX package for 7500 last year, and it was in pristine condition with snap out carpet, fiberglass floor, and a nice galvanized trailer. And boats in Seattle tend to command a premium. So I would say they are dreaming if they think that boat is worth 7K. They may just be holding out for a sucker, don't let it be you.

Sorry, re read the post, 5K is still way to high though. Looks like it needs a stereo. And there is no passenger seating, WTF, offer 2K and see what he does.
