I removed my thermostat to help prevent a overheating problem. I have a 91 model, 85 yamaha outboard. I know the best thing to do is remove the exhaust manifold and clean out all the deposits but I am afraid of breaking a bolt in the head. Will removing the thermostat cause me any problems?

Unless the thermostat was sticking closed, removing it won't make it run any cooler. If it was sticking closed replace it. If that wasn't the problem you still have a problem somewhere else that needs fixing. Start with the pump itself.

Re: 85 Yamaha overheating

Just been through a big saga with my 80 overheating.

Turned out to be broken impella debis from a previous owner, easy fix! well it would be if thirteen out of the eighteen bolts had not snapped.

Now have to remove the powerhead to have them machined out.

Good luck
