Interesting question, I hope.

1984 85hp Force.

Rebuilt carbs, new plugs, readjusted choke/throttle/idle, QuicKleen in the tank.

How long is the normal warm-up time for this motor? Here's why I'm asking. When I took her out yesterday from the public launch, I let her sit for my usual couple of minutes (and let me tell you, she's like a smoke bomb at warmup!). As soon as I put her in gear, she died. I finally got her up again, but she died on gear change (forward to reverse), couldn't start her, and I hit another boat (only at 1mph, no damage). Ok, I switched to the paddle, and rowed over to the doc. From which I waited, for about 10 minutes before she would start again (I guess she was flooded to heck, I love the smell of gas!). After I got her out and at WOT for awhile, she had no problems starting back up.

What I learned this weekend, is that I need to use a paddle while mooring and navigating the docs while this motor warms up. If I don't, I'll cause some damage.

Any ideas?

1 - warm-up time.
2 - why does she die while changing gears?

As always, thanks for the help!

Ry.

Re: 85hp Force Warm-up Time

I had the same type of problems and it it seemed to be the Idle was ajdusted to low, and that the Throttle cable wasn't giving enough spring to pull it back from WOT to idle correctly. Hope this helps.

Thanks,
Bryan Cox

Re: 85hp Force Warm-up Time

I have the 1988 Force 85 and have found 3/4 turn out from seat on all carb low speed jets works best. I set the idle at 900-1000 in neutral (750/800 in gear). I use a 3.5 hp trolling motor in and out of the harbour and then start the Force, run for 60 seconds and go. I pre-set the timing with the plugs out, in gear, throttle open wide, using the starter, at 30 degs. Then put the plugs in, went out in the lake and set the timing to best performance by running to max speed GPS, stopping the engine, advancing the timing 1/2 turn, starting, running up to max,,,, over again and again until speed dropped a little. Than backed off the timing 3/4 turn. Took a little time but went from 27 mph to 33.5 mph. Boat setup wet weighs 1450 lbs. Hope this helps. Larry
